Maximizing The American Express EveryDay Card For Travel
This post will show you how to best maximize the EveryDay card by American Express. If you would like to see more posts on how to maximize your card for travel, then follow My Travel Resource’s posts here.
Is the American Express EveryDay card for you? Well, it is a great option for those that have a little credit card history but want to get a card with great travel benefits. This card offers a great variety of options for reward redemption and add-on point multipliers. Let me explain:
A Nice Sign-Up Bonus Means Instant Travel
The Amex EveryDay currently has a sign-up bonus of 10,000 points after $1,000 of spend in the first 3 months. This is equivalent of $100 to $300 depending on your redemption choice. Click here if you want to learn the best ways to redeem your points for the most value. The requirement of $1000 is manageable for most people, but if you do not normally spend that over the course of 3 months then make sure to open it before a large purchase.
Point Multiplier at Supermarkets (NOT Superstores)
After the sign-up bonus, the card offers a few ways to earn points at a faster rate rate than the normal 1X point per $1 spent. The card earns 2X points on Supermarkets on up to $6,000, but there’s a catch. The biggest mistake people make is that they think that Superstores like Walmart, Target, etc. counts as a Supermarket. It doesn’t. Supermarkets include stores like Whole Foods, Winn-Dixie, Foodtown, etc. The list of stores that count as Supermarkets instead of Superstores and Wholesalers is disappointing , but this could be a great benefit for those that shop at these locations.
20% Monthly Point Bonus
On top of 2X points on Supermarkets, the Amex EveryDay gives a 20% point bonus on all points earned for the month as long as you hit a 20 transaction minimum. I have found this to be easily doable and a great perk. Note that the sign-up bonus is not included in the 20% bonus. And yes, you could buy 20 things at once and split them up into 20 different transactions if you really wanted to. But don’t be that person.
American Express Offers
The major perk of this credit card is honestly the fact that it has the same Amex Offer opportunities as other cards. These offers change often and expire after set amounts of time. However, they have some really good options for those that check in periodically. Currently (9/3/18), American Express has the option to add a Quick Trip Bonus to the card where you get 2X points per dollar spent through 12/31/2018. You can also add a Best Buy bonus for 2X points through the end of October. I recently used an Amazon offer where I earned 2,000 bonus points after spending $50! These bonuses are completely worth checking before making any purchase online.
Membership Rewards Redemption Methods
American Express straightforward tells you how much you can redeem points for with different redemption methods. However, it does not put a value on the points when transferring to an airline or hotel loyalty program. Long story short: You can easily get better value. There are 16 airline partners and 3 hotel partners. These numbers don’t seem particularly large, but they are misleading. For example, you can book award flights through airline partners. American Airlines is not a partner with American Express, but British Airways is. I can transfer my rewards points to British Airways and then book American flights for amazing value. Also, there are only 3 hotel partners, but they are the most well-known brands in the world (Marriott and Hilton).
Side note: You can buy almost everything online for additional points if you use shopping portals provided by the card companies or frequent flyer programs. Learn how to earn more points here.
Booking Hotels Through RocketMiles (Sometimes)
Another opportunity to earn bonus Membership Reward points is to book your hotel nights through Rocket Miles. American Express is one of the many partners that Rocket Miles has to earn extra points through and there are some great deals! All you have to do is log on to Rocket Miles and pay with your American Express card and you will receive a bonus of up to 10,000 bonus miles per night ! However, always compare the prices with other websites because the prices can sometimes be higher, and that defeats the purpose of getting extra miles. Another thing to take into mind is that this is an OTA like Expedia, Orbitz, etc. Customer service issues seem to happen more across all OTA’s, but the rewards are worth it if everything goes smoothly.
The Bottom Line
Overall, I really enjoy this card. I use the Amex Offers often, and I am booking a trip through Rocket Miles for the bonus soon. The card also has many different options for transferring and utilizing the Rewards Points, and I really value that. The bottom line is that this card offers great value with no annual fee. Let me know if you have this card or if you get it !
